7 Things You Need To Look For When Buying a World Globe

It comes in different sizes and themes. It can be illuminated or it can look antiquated. A world globe — a three-dimensional and a more accurate representation of our planet — is a great piece to display at home or work. Whether you’re looking for one for yourself or as a gift for a loved one, there are various things that you have to take into account. We’ve rounded up seven of them.

Type. A globe can be physical or political. The former emphasizes the topographical details of the Earth (e.g. Terrain, ecological zones). In the latter, political borders are highlighted (e.g., names of countries and cities). It also contains little detail about the planet’s physical features. For easier identification of territories, political globes have bold and bright colors.

Size. A world globe is measured by diameter. It can range anywhere from one inch to 32 inches. As the globe gets bigger in size, the number of place names on it also increases. For instance, a 12-inch political globe has about 4,000 territory names; a 20-inch one has around 500 more.

Display location. There are three main globe types by display location: floor globes, tabletop globes, and desk globes. Desk globes are the smallest at one to nine inches. Tabletop globes, on the other hand, range from 9 to 14 inches in size. Globes that are displayed on the floor can be up to 32 inches.

Color. You may commonly see globes with blue as the dominant color. This color represents the oceans. This type of globe also has other bright colors to represent political territories. If you’re looking for a more classic feel to match its display location’s theme or color palette, an antiquated globe is for you. While it has a nostalgic appeal, this globe actually has updated information.

Mounting style. A world globe also has different mounting styles. The inclination style lets you fully rotate the planet’s replica mounted on a spire along one axis. As the name implies, the meridian mounting style allows you to do the same, only that the globe is placed on a meridian. Most globes for educational reference use either of the two. Those that are purely for decoration are typically mounted on a leg and a large base.

Features. Globes that are called raised relief globes have a more defined texture to represent mountain rangers and other land formations. This is a great feature if you’re more particular about seeing the Earth’s physical features. If you want your globe for more practical uses, illuminated ones can be used as a nightlight. There are also those that are equipped with clocks. For educational purposes, some globes have interactive features such as surfaces that can be written upon.

Manufacturer. There are a number of world globe manufacturers. When looking for a brand, you have to look into its level of craftsmanship and accuracy. Some brands also specialize in making specific types of globes (e.g. Glass globes). Make sure that they produce the kind that you’re looking for.
